Windows XP is still a great OS (Operating System) after Windows 7, hence this guide is designed for Windows XP but some ideas will also work with any Windows Computer.
With today's technology, new computer unit, hasty processor, rich memory, high
hard drive capacity, and your hard drive is regularly reformatted. But,
still its not enough, we still face a lot of problems and short comings
in the productivity of our activities in our system, and generally,
running our system on its daily task and endeavors.
Thus, we have designed 10
ways to make you stay in your computer screen longer and have a high
performance output with your computer most of the time. live at your
fullest as we turn your computer running to its highest potential and
capability.
1. Eliminate Unnecessary Startup Programs
Eliminate Unnecessary Programs which starts during your
Computer loads at startup (as this startup program delays your loading
time and eats up your memory system). you can end this
by using MSCONFIG in command window. To begin using MSCONFIG, click
Start in the Taskbar and Click Run, for shortcut use CTRL + R in the Desktop, then type MSCONFIG in the command window and press Enter (This will open the System Configuration Utility).
Click
on the Startup Tab in the System Configuration Utility and UnCheck
those Programs which doesnt need to be loaded in your System at Startup
(Example: iTunesHelper, Scheduler, such as jusched (Java Schedule),
realsched (Real Player Schedule), QTTask (QuickTime Task Manager) or you
may Disable Everything, but Except for Firewalls and Antivirus. if you
are unsure of the rest, you may contact us in our chatbox or email us on
the Author's Email address).
2. Stop Unnecessary Services
Stop Unnecessary Services running on your system when
your computer starts, just like ending startup programs, you can stop
this services by running MSCONFIG, click on the
Services Tab, and click hide Microsoft Services (Safety Purposes) and
start unchecking those services which doesn't need to start at your
computer run time (Example: Adobe Mobile Device, iPod Services, ETC.).
3. Defrag Hard Drive Regularly
As one of the basic steps to have a faster application startup and system stable condition (Speed, Performance), it is a must
to defrag your system regularly (Monthly Schedule), and also during the
times when you install applications/programs which consist of around
1GB files or more, or moving or changing your system files (Transferring
Files, Music, Video from another Folder or Storage Media), as
defragment will reorganize the storage space on your hard drive and
optimize its performance by consolidating related files.
4. Defrag Registry Regularly
Registry fragmentation occurs because certain processes
continually use the registry to incrementally modify the same values in
the corresponding registry hives. Microsoft warns, for example, that
this fragmentation, in certain cases, may be excessive. File sizes may
eventually exceed the Registry Size Limits imposed by Windows and this
will cause subsequent modifications to the registry to fail with
resultant errors, slowdowns and crashes.
Thus, it is necessary to defrag your registry, and this can be
achieved with a 3rd party software or known as tweaks, recommended
application to defrag your registry files are the following: Registry Booster 2 and Tune Up Utilities 2008
Registry Booster is designed to reorganize the data within your
registry so that your computer runs more efficiently. Registry
fragmentation is a similar phenomenon as fragmented hard drives. Your
computer will slot new pieces of data in empty areas of your registry.
If the file is too big for the slot, your computer will break it up and
put a piece in one slot and another elsewhere. This creates gaps, wasted
space and increase the probability of corruption of your registry. By
defragging your registry, Registry Booster will create a more linear
structure maximising application response times and registry access
times, saving memory (smaller registries consume less memory), and
enhanced boot-up times. This results in improved system performance and
decreases the probability of registry corruption
5. Delete Temporary Files Regularly
Delete Temporary Files to Increase Hard Drive Space and Increase System Performance, this can be done by clicking Start then My Computer
and right click on your primary Hard Drive (Defualt: Local Disk (C:)),
then click on the Disk Cleanup, it may take sometime, depending on your
system temporary files; to remedy this problem, use CCleaner, it is one
of the best system optimization and privacy tool, and best of all its
totally free.
6. Increase TCP/IP (to 100) for faster Internet Activity
Increasing TCP/IP Connection will enhance your internet
speed and download, in Windows XP Service Pack 2, this feature, TCP/IP
Connection has been reduce to 10 ports as default, since opening more
than 10 ports could make your computer system more vulnerable to
internet spyware and viruses, but, this can easily be remedy by a secure
and reliable (real-time) antivirus and firewall; to increase your
TCP/IP Connection, with various research we found a very convenient
patch that could easily changed your TCP/IP into desired numbers. click HERE for patch download. All credits goes to Markus Goslar for making this great patch. (Notice: This patch will be mistaken by the antivirus as eviltool virus, but it is just a false notification. With TCP/IP Value Limit, Recommended value is 100, more than 100 could result to unstable internet connection and might also cause crashes to your system).
7. Always Install Anti-virus, Firewall and Anti-Spyware Program
As a standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in running your
system, it needs to have a reliable and secured Anti-virus, Firewall and
Anti-Spyware Program, as your system is always vulnerable to attacks
(Virus, Trojans, Key Logger, ETC.) especially to those online users,
Anti-Virus and Firewall is a must, but, we don't stop
there on having an Anti-Virus on our system, but we have to choose the
best, and with the best, it must be secured, reliable, always updated
and important thing is that it has a feature which what we call
"real-time" virus detection Anti-Virus Program.
8. Always Update Windows XP and Security Programs
As the line stated, Update Windows XP and Security
Programs Regularly, this may be irrelevant in some ways, but with
updated windows hotfix, it could help boosting up your system
vulnerability to system crashes and failures, trojans, viruses, and also
with updated software, it could increase your system performance and
nonetheless stay secured and updated in today's fast changing
environment.
9. Eliminate Unnecessary Programs
Eliminating unnecessary programs in your system could
help in improving your system performance and optimizing your hard drive
space. With unnecessary programs, it doesn't only mean to the programs
which we don't use for ages, but it also applies to different redundant
programs we have in our system, for example if you have more than 10
Video Players, it could just clutter up your space and worse destroy
each other Video CODEC, that could result to an undesirable Video
Output.
10. Increase Virtual Memory
Running your Applications takes up memory, and sadly
when we used up all the available memory resources we have, your system
might crash and will prompt a Blue Screen of Death
(BSD) or may prompt a message box to close some application in order to
proceed with your activity, but, with this simple feature of windows xp
and at low cost, the system will also takes up a virtual memory as part
of your memory in running your programs. this virtual memory takes part
as your RAM but using up your Hard Drive Space, dependent on how it has
been set (Steps to Changed will follow after this) and sadly, if it will
also be used up, this will prompt a "Low Virtual Memory" in your system
tray, and to resolve this problem, and boost up your system more, here
are the ways to increase your virtual memory system.
Click Start and go to Control Panel, then click Switch to Classic View and go to System, (Shortcut: Windows Key + Pause/Break) this will open the System Properties,
click on the Advance Tab, then click Settings, under performance, then
click Advanced Tab and click changed under Virtual Memory, after
clicking "Change" it will open the Virtual Memory
Panel, then Changed Initial Size to 768 (40 GB Hard Disk Capacity) or
1138 (80 GB Hard Disk Capacity) then changed the Maximum Size to 2536 or
more (This will depend entirely on your hard drive capacity). then
Click Set, and Restart your System.
Good Luck and Hope it Helps.
You might wonder why this guide is for Windows XP lol, currently I am still using this system, thus I haven't had enough time to tweak and play with Windows 7, though please expect a guide for Windows 7 soon. Thank you.
